Richard Dawkins letter of Support to YFT

This is just the first bit of a letter Richard Dawkins wrote to the young writers at the blog Young Free Thought

Young Freethought is an independent blog, open for anyone, but with the aim of providing young people with a way of getting out their ideas regarding issues such as rationalism, atheism, science and philosophy.

I would encourage everyone Religious or Not to read this thoughtful letter in its entirety and think ,really think for yourself.

I was delighted when Michael wrote to tell me about youngfreethought.com. So delighted that I hope you will overlook my age and allow me to explain why I think you are making such a valiant contribution to the cause of atheism, rationalism and secularism.

It is all too easy for debates about the role of religion to become inward-looking and academic, but it really does matter. Every day, all across the world, millions of our fellow humans are diminished by religion: religion that may force them to mutilate their children, cover their hair or faces, stay silent when they have so much more to say than those who suppress them, surrender control over their reproduction, donate money they cannot afford, obey and submit to their inferiors, deny reality, forgo education, close their minds, reject proper medical care, suffer needlessly, be burdened by pointless guilt, and live with the spectre of eternal torment. Every day, religion works to recruit more victims, among the young, the sick, the poor and dispossessed, the old: anyone who is weak and vulnerable is a legitimate target in religion’s eyes.

You know what sucks ...Cars do. one nut breaks ,out with the engine tap the hole then back in with the engine but not so quick the car has to be jacked up lowered jacked up again slide a bunch of wood and bricks under the engine ...OH! it doesnt want to go in oh nice it is raining, oh wait it is in, now contort the hands, arms, body to reach the nuts,bolts,fuel line, throttle cable, heater cables and hoses. jack car back up fight with the exhaust prying into place with random pieces of wood, strain to hold pipe while installing clamp with other hand while also holding wrenches and ratchet. put the carb back on plug in all the wires and fuel lines, install engine tin slashing a plug wire in the process, fix plug wire, install generator belt ......wait where is the nut ... look all over for nut, hey look vintage bus parts...never find nut in garage or at hardware stor or at two auto parts stores, look for nut all over garage ,find all sorts of interesting things none of which is a VW generator pulley nut, clean up tools ,well slam tools around in garage, turn out light go inside take bath and stew about the holiday tomorrow preventing access to stores with M12 1.5 nut......

While reading about Dutch Bicycle Culture at Willothewisp Blog, I came across this bit about Bike Helmets (and Lycra)... Awesome, really just the best.

I hate bike helmets as they are truly worthless ,really just a way for a few companies to make some cash. Pretty much all the safety legislation that causes helmet laws around the world originates from helmet manufacturers. Most all the research shows that helmets on cyclists are pretty much worthless ans some indicates that they may actually do more harm than good by transforming direct impact to rotational impact ,which is much more traumatic. Anyway, Here is the most excellent commentary from Holland.


This is extremely important; do NOT wear a helmet. Three types of people wear a helmet on a bike in Holland;

1. The English.
2. North Americans.
3. The mentally afflicted.

The English and Americans wear helmets because in their worlds common sense no longer rules and people must be safe from their own actions at all times. Also it is a well known fact that when Americans fall off a bike they fall on their heads, why this should be we do not know. God gave us each an ass, in fact he appears to have given many Americans more than one ass each and yet they do not use them, you have to wonder why. On the rare occasion a Dutchman comes off their bike we fall on our well padded behinds (and it’s ALWAYS the fault of a German motorist).

The only time you need to wear lycra when riding a bicycle is when you are a speed rider at a velodrome or riding in the Tour de France, there is not any other occasion when lycra and bicycles should be mixed together.
