Every day I hear otherwise intelligent people go on an on about how taxes are bad and how the government is out to get our money and so on. Everyone needs to let go of their medieval peasant point of view. That is one of the reasons we created The United States, so we would not live in servitude. Your taxes are the money you pitch in with everyone else so we can have a country, if you have become wealthy due to the advantages of living in this country, your part will be more. Taxes are not the same in the USA as they were when the king sent someone to collect. The wort thing is that many of our elected officials need to read that textbook the most.

Nearly every day I go out of my way to make certain that the "faithful" around me are comfortable. I keep my opinions on religion to myself, avoid reading atheist blogs on the computer lest a co worker be exposed and feel uncomfortable, and supportively listen to them go on about how the devil is to blame for their problems and how god will get them through rough times. When they start talking about religiously fueled topics from the news I am politely silent or steer the conversation away from religion. I don't go off when they ask my kid about church or Jesus or hand her a bible. I never assume my beliefs and opinions are everyone's. When in a small group if a co-worker or friend has a belief different from the majority I make an extra effort to make sure they are not offended by the conversation and feel at ease. If a christian friend is in a group of non theists I will do my best to talk about something we all have in common rather than go on about how great Christopher Hitchens' last talk was, that is just being a nice person. Unless the situation is one specifically set up for debate or discussion everyone should feel safe and at ease. This should perhaps be the most true in the workplace but this is often where the situation is the worst.
On a daily basis at my workplace (a small midwestern liberal arts college) I am exposed to a barrage of Christian opinions and commentary, I remain polite and non confrontative. Last week while discussing the state of affairs at the college and in the country in general, an otherwise intelligence and respected person spouted some of the most offensive and ignorant statements I have heard in some time. This person prefaced his statements with the disclaimer " I am a person of faith so I can say this," he then proceeded to degrade anyone who was not a person of faith, specifically his faith. He proudly said, " Can you imagine how much trouble our country would be in if we ever elected a president who didn't believe in god? " He then went on to also include Muslims and Hindus with atheists as examples of people who would destroy the American way of life if put into a position of power. Considering that this person is a teaching faculty at a very liberal yet outwardly very PC college I am surprised that he would make these statements so openly, perhaps he thought his disclaimer made it OK. I must conclude that he simply assumed he was in like minded company as we were at the service building and aside from himself we were all blue collar "staff" people and we all know hourly workers are all god fearin' Americans. The irony of this encounter is that the conversation began as a light talk about a need for common sense at the upper levels of the college as we search for people to fill important positions.
The truth is, those of us without religion or faith are the the least likely to pre judge or condemn people for their religion, race , gender or any other adjective you can come up with instead choosing to get to know them before forming an opinion. We require evidence before making a conclusion and we are always open to change our opinion as new evidence comes to light or situations change. We want everyone to feel safe and comfortable, we don't care what you personally believe until it infringes on the lives of others. Your religion should be a personal thing. I hear Christians go on about their personal relationship with god all the time but they seldom keep it personal. Perhaps it is time the "persons of faith" keep it to themselves. Or perhaps the better choice may be for those of us without, to start speaking up.

As I read thissecession document from the civil war,I reaffirm my belief that those who fly a confederate flag are either willfully ignorant of what it symbolizes or are just unashamed racists. The confederacy and it's secession from the united states was about slavery and the weak arguments about taxation and states rights are complete bullshit. Sure it was about the states rights, to keep slaves, but the proud southerners (and northern rednecks) seldom mention that part of the argument.

As of Late I have heard many female friends from primarily Islamic countries tell me that they had to get rid of clothing and personal items before they return home from the US (Graduating College Students)lest they be in trouble. The thing that gets me is that these are really intelligent strong women yet they don't seem to be very upset that the culture (religion) that is most prominent in their homelands is so amazingly stupid and oppressive. Take this story from an Islamic district in Indonesia. In this district a woman can be arrested for wearing jeans. They are of course arrested by the Islamic police. While I find most religion generally ridiculous and at times evil, as of late it is hard not to put Islam at the top of the list. The idea that women should completely cover themselves so that men wont be tempted by them is not only oppressively offensive to the women but also just disrespectful to men are Muslim men really so weak that they cannot possibly control their sexual desires at the sight of a bit of skin or even a covered leg for that matter. Asinine.

Of course this is actually a really trivial example of Islam's oppression and cruelty towards women in comparison to the violence inflicted upon Muslim women on a daily basis.

So, I was listening to a story on NPR about a group called the AIDS Healthcare Foundation who are lobbying for mandatory condom use in the porn industry, Seriously? a group concerned about AIDS is trying to find someone to make laws regulating condom use in porn. I wonder what other things they could focus their efforts on? How about not letting Catholics tell everyone that condoms are sinful ? OH and how about revoking all funding for the Catholic morons who go to AIDS stricken countries and lie to the people about AIDS telling them not to use condoms ( with the handy threat of eternal damnation as incentive) . Or how about working on eliminating asinine abstinence only sex education in the schools, because that has worked really well so far. Fucking Idiots I have to wonder how they became so interested in the porn, hmmmmmm. I am sure there are more important condom and AIDS issues to lobby about.

Ok so I will attempt to explain how it works.

“We The People” find someone who we believe represents our views . We elect that person and send them to a big room where people from other areas (this happens at a local , state and federal level) get together and try to best figure out how we can all work together to make a happy home (city,county,state,country). This group of people are tasked to make laws everyone can agree on and decide how to spend the money we all throw in a big pot to take care of the country state etc. Seems pretty simple doesn’t it? Well it isn’t .Why? because many of the people for the most part are lazy and or stupid. Most people refuse to take the time to get involved or put in some work . How many people actually read legislation or attend open meetings be it city council or congress. Un fortunately we have media to feed the info to the lazy who will just believe what they hear either because they are easily scares or just too lazy to see if the facts check out. It used to be that news organizations had some journalistic integrity and what as reported was simply the facts, this is rather rare these days. Now we get constant fear mongering , spin, distorted info and downright lies. Really all one has to do is spend a little time reading and researching to find the truth. The hard part is that the truth and the facts aren’t usually found coming from the easiest accessed loudest most obnoxious source. Stop listening to the morons with the big signs waving the flag, they really don’t know what they are talking about. Most legislation is available for public viewing (the entire health care bill was available online). The main thing everyone needs to do if we want good government is to get involved. Corporations and special interest groups with big money should not run things people should, but only if they are well informed and literate.
Stop letting the idiots on TV especially those who are lying (FOX News) and the moronic fringe that make a lot of noise(Tea Party Types) drive the conversation. I hear a lot of talk about how a large percentage of people distrust the government , well you know whose fault that is it is? Your own. You hired them. There is nothing worse than some asinine loudmouth spouting off about how bad the government who didn’t vote or pay attention until someone on TV or Radio told them that they were wronged or that they should be afraid of something.
About Taxation, socialism and communism. Don’t use any of these words until you know what they mean. I hear a a lot of bitching about taxes, well taxes are how we get to have a country. Taxes pay for the infrastructure that our entire society is built on. We all pitch in (taxes) so that we can have the basic things we all need to survive. Roads , utility lines (Yes government subsidies make it so the electric company can afford to send that electricity everywhere) Police, Fire departments , agencies to oversee corporations to make sure they don’t rip you off (yes history proves that if we as a collective group don’t hire someone to regulate many corporations they will have their way with us. Competition works some of the time but corruption greed and bullying often run away if not kept in check). Stop crying socialism. Were it not for a sprinkle of socialism (which by the way is just a philosophy that expects everyone to help everyone out for the good of the whole. Doesn’t always work for the same reasons every other philosophy doesn’t always work.) we would not have a very functional society. Those who yell so loudly that they don’t want to share the burden by paying taxes or say that they are afraid of socialism should go ahead and stop paying but along with that, try to forget the education they got (or were at least offered) , stop driving on the public roads and interstate highway system, stop eating any food or taking any medicine made safe by the FDA and don’t drink any more of that clean water either. I could go on but then again this is probably already too long for any of those folks to read anyway.
Really it is pretty simple, educate yourself, send the right people to represent you and then if they don’t do what they promised fire them and get someone else. This way those tax dollars will go where you want them to.
Remember however that the most important part of this equation is the people and the people must educate themselves . This education should not be one gathered from lying drug addict millionaires on the radio or fake crying liars on TV. Read the real documents yourself. Watch the unedited speeches yourself. Pay attention when what those you elected say different things to different people.

You know what sucks ...Cars do. one nut breaks ,out with the engine tap the hole then back in with the engine but not so quick the car has to be jacked up lowered jacked up again slide a bunch of wood and bricks under the engine ...OH! it doesnt want to go in oh nice it is raining, oh wait it is in, now contort the hands, arms, body to reach the nuts,bolts,fuel line, throttle cable, heater cables and hoses. jack car back up fight with the exhaust prying into place with random pieces of wood, strain to hold pipe while installing clamp with other hand while also holding wrenches and ratchet. put the carb back on plug in all the wires and fuel lines, install engine tin slashing a plug wire in the process, fix plug wire, install generator belt ......wait where is the nut ... look all over for nut, hey look vintage bus parts...never find nut in garage or at hardware stor or at two auto parts stores, look for nut all over garage ,find all sorts of interesting things none of which is a VW generator pulley nut, clean up tools ,well slam tools around in garage, turn out light go inside take bath and stew about the holiday tomorrow preventing access to stores with M12 1.5 nut......

While reading about Dutch Bicycle Culture at Willothewisp Blog, I came across this bit about Bike Helmets (and Lycra)... Awesome, really just the best.

I hate bike helmets as they are truly worthless ,really just a way for a few companies to make some cash. Pretty much all the safety legislation that causes helmet laws around the world originates from helmet manufacturers. Most all the research shows that helmets on cyclists are pretty much worthless ans some indicates that they may actually do more harm than good by transforming direct impact to rotational impact ,which is much more traumatic. Anyway, Here is the most excellent commentary from Holland.

This is extremely important; do NOT wear a helmet. Three types of people wear a helmet on a bike in Holland;

1. The English.
2. North Americans.
3. The mentally afflicted.

The English and Americans wear helmets because in their worlds common sense no longer rules and people must be safe from their own actions at all times. Also it is a well known fact that when Americans fall off a bike they fall on their heads, why this should be we do not know. God gave us each an ass, in fact he appears to have given many Americans more than one ass each and yet they do not use them, you have to wonder why. On the rare occasion a Dutchman comes off their bike we fall on our well padded behinds (and it’s ALWAYS the fault of a German motorist).

The only time you need to wear lycra when riding a bicycle is when you are a speed rider at a velodrome or riding in the Tour de France, there is not any other occasion when lycra and bicycles should be mixed together.
